5 Big Journaling Excuses Busted!
I’ve been surprised at the number of people who have told me that they’ve been wanting to start journaling, but didn’t couldn’t because of various reasons .
Let me help:
📕 “I can start as soon as I find the perfect journal.”
(Sure, it’s lovely to have a nice book with smooth paper and thinly ruled lines, but it’s not a necessity. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of getting started here!)
⏰ “I don’t have time.”
(Seriously, you can find a few minutes every day. If you can’t find 15 minutes, can you start with 5? It doesn’t matter when, just that you make the time somewhere.)
🛋 “I don’t have a special place to write.”
(I’m super jealous of people who have meditation rooms, reading corners & offices. I sit on my couch to journal. On weekends I journal in bed, still snuggled under the covers. If the only place you get privacy is the bathroom, do it there!)
🤷♀️”I don’t know what to write about.”
(Cool! Start there. Make your first post about why you want to journal. What do you want to accomplish? What benefits do you want to see? Once you are clear on what you want to get from journaling, it’ll be easier to decide how and what you want to write.)
⚖️ “I don’t think I can write like (fill in name of smart person here).”
(So what? No one is asking you to. This is just for you. Write how you talk. Use bullet points instead of full sentences. Draw pictures if you want. No one else’s opinions matter here. No one else needs to see your book. Your journal is just for you.)
🤔“It’s easy for you to say this, Amanda. You’ve clearly made journaling work for you.”
Yes, I have.
Want the truth?
✍️ Some days it’s really fun for me to write. Other days I struggle finding any words at all.
✍️ Sometimes my penmanship is lovely and beautiful and other times I can barely read it because I’m writing so fast it looks like scribble.
✍️ I have changed how I journal about a hundred times. I take what works and carry it forward and leave the rest behind.
✍️ I don’t think there’s one right way to journal. Just what’s right for me right now. How I journal looked different a year ago. It’ll likely look different a year from now as I keep growing.
✍️ As much as I like journaling, I like talking about journaling even more. Helping you get started, learn to journal better, see the results in your life - that’s the best feeling. Trust me, I’ve written about it in my journal!
So what’s keeping you from getting started journaling?
What can you do to get started today?
