We’re nearly halfway through the year. How are you doing on the goals you set in January?
Do you remember what your goals are?!?
That used to be me. I used to take so much pride in setting the perfect goals. I’d write them down, tuck them somewhere safe, and promptly forgot all about them.
That all changed for me a few years ago. In December 2020, I spent three glorious weeks of my journaling time in front of our lit Christmas tree, reflecting on my life, setting goals, really getting myself prepared for the new year ahead.
And because I had done SO much work, I really wanted to honor my effort. I wanted to follow through and reach those goals!
So I wrote them in my journal.
And then I made it a point to revisit them every week.
I call it Sunday Accountability Journaling. I’ll look at each goal, and report to myself the progress I’m making - no bit of forward motion is too small. By recording my micro wins, I build momentum to keep working toward that big goal. And I create a log of all my accomplishments that I can turn to when I’m feeling frustrated and stuck. That list reminds me of how far I’ve already come.
Over the years I’ve added other tools including habit trackers and accountability partners.
And it makes a BIG difference!
Holding myself accountable for working toward the goals I set provides me lots of opportunity to reflect on how I’m doing so I can course correct as necessary.
And I reach more of the goals I set.
Accountability is essential.
That’s part of how I got into running journaling groups. A friend of mine had told me, “I want to journal. I really believe it’ll help me, but I can’t make myself do it for me. But I’d do it if I was accountable to someone else.”
Participants in my groups get accountability to keep them showing up and keep them working toward their goals.
This week I made a decision to add a new service to my offerings, and you’re the first to know.

One Journaling Idea I Love:
Photo Journals
Like writing AND photography? Combine them in a photo journal. Select a photo and write a passage to accompany it in your journal. What was significant about the photo? When and where was it taken? What were the circumstances surrounding it? How do you feel when you look at it? What do you always want to remember about it?
This is a journal that could be kept digitally or by hand if you’re much better than I am at printing your photos!
