One of the most beautiful gifts journaling can give us is the gift of connection.
Connection with ourselves.
In this busy world we live in,
As we hustle from this task to the next,
This responsibility to the next,
It’s so easy to put ourselves last.
To consider what we need as a nice-to-do-if-there’s-time-left-over.
And it’s easy to become lost.
My one regret in life is that I didn’t journal enough when my kids were small.
I meant to, of course,
But I had all the excuses:
I was busy.
I was tired.
I honestly believed I’d remember the details of day to day living.
And not only did I miss out
On documenting the cute and wonderful things my children did,
I missed out on a lot of years of getting to know myself -
Who I was
What I wanted
What brought me joy
What I needed
How I felt
It’s no wonder that I found myself lost,
Faced with a divorce I didn’t see coming
(Because I wasn’t paying attention to what was happening in my life).
So I turned back to my journal
And found what I was looking for:
A way to connect with myself.
A way to know myself.
A way to love myself.
Journaling has become for me a necessary daily activity,
No longer a nice-to-do.
It’s a mission critical activity.
Each morning when I take my pen in hand,
I get to meet myself where I’m at, right there on the page.
How am I today?
What am I feeling?
Where am I feeling it in my body?
What’s important to me today?
What’s important for me to do today?
What do I need to support me in those moments/actions?
How can I better take care of myself?
What kind of support do I need?
Who needs my help today?
Sometimes I purposefully ask myself questions like these.
Sometimes the answers tumble out unbidden.
Each day is a little different.
But each day I get to know myself a little more.
Each day I get to take care of myself a little better.
Each day I get to build trust in myself that I can take care of me.
My relationship with myself gets stronger
And more fulfilling when I journal.
Not only that,
But my relationships with others have improved too.
Because the better I know myself,
The better I understand what I need and want,
The easier it becomes to ask others for help.
And the more I practice asking for help,
The easier it becomes to receive it.
People around me no longer have to play guessing games,
Trying to figure out how they can help me.
Because when I know, I can tell them.
Journaling helps me know.
And when I forget,
Journaling helps me remember.
Every time, journaling brings me back to myself.
I will always be grateful.
