One small thing
What’s one small thing you can do that would greatly improve your life?
That’s a journal prompt I worked through in a journaling session I facilitated last week.
I’ll tell you, this one was a hard one for me because there were so many options.
Getting enough sleep at night
Eating better
Moving more
Keeping better boundaries between work and home
Spending more time with my family
And, and, and!
This exercise was made harder because I’m an All The Things person. All of them. If a little is good, all of the things is better, right?
Except when it’s not.
So how did I work through this journal prompt? Here’s a peek into my process:
I knew my one small thing would have something to do with movement. So I brainstormed:
Put on sneakers when I get dressed in the morning so I’d be more likely to stand up throughout the day
Set a timer for every hour so I can get out of my chair and move
Add 10 minutes of cardio to every strength workout
And finally inspiration struck!
End each day with a walk around the neighborhood. We have a lovely 1.7 mile loop that I can walk every night at 8pm.
Why 8pm? Because I’m done with all of my evening meetings by 8 and it’ll be light out long enough to finish it. At least now. If I walk fast!
So I set an alarm on my phone. I invited my family to walk with me.
This will be my one small thing.
And I’m excited to see what big results it yields.

Weekly Journal Prompts:
Use these prompts as written or as inspiration to uncover what you need in your life this week.
What’s one small thing you can do that will greatly improve your life?

One Journaling Idea I Love:
What if?
Use your journal to work through possibilities using the phrase “what if?” What would happen? What would it look like?
What if you pursued that side hustle idea you’ve been thinking about?
What if you had that difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding?
What if you made an appointment with a therapist?
What if you turned off your phone to give your family your full attention?
What might you uncover? What idea might you pursue?

Not only did journaling with Amanda and the group shift my relationship to writing, but also I connected with some amazing people on a surprisingly deep level. Amanda knows just how to hold space for a group like this. I think SHE is magic!
- Emily C.
[Amanda] does in fact create magic by helping you think through various journal prompts, asking insightful questions, and creating a safe, vulnerable space to share your thoughts. The connections I made with myself and the others in the class were meaningful, powerful and lasting.
