Bianca, the mean girl in my head, loves to remind me that I’m behind.
She sets arbitrary self-imposed deadlines, and not tell me until it’s already too late to meet them.
She whispers to me that I’ve missed my chance, that I’ll never catch up, that it’s not worth even trying.
That it’s better to fail by not trying than to try and fail anyway.
Bianca tells me that I’m too old. That if I haven’t done the things by now, I will never do them.
I know that’s not true. I have so much life in front of me.
And I’ve been reminded multiple times this week that time will pass whether or not I do the things. So it’s really never too late to try.
If Julia Child published her cookbook at 50, Peter Roget didn’t publish his thesaurus until he was 73, and Grandma Moses started painting at 76, I have plenty of time to do big things.
It’s not too late in my life to start something new.
It’s not too late in the year for me to work toward my goals.
It’s not too late in the month to start prepping for the holidays.
I spent yesterday afternoon finally making holiday wreaths. Bianca had tried to tell me that it wasn’t worth making them since it was so late; that there are only two weeks left before Christmas. That it’d be more trouble than it was worth.
But the holidays will come whether I make my wreaths or not. And I knew it’d bring me joy to both make them and to see them on my doors over the next weeks.
I’m forever grateful for my journal and how it supports me in dreaming dreams, setting goals, and tracking my progress. It reminds me that I’m stronger and smarter and more capable than I think - definitely more so than Bianca whispers to me in my tired, overwhelmed moments.
Time will keep passing.
