What got you here won't get you there
Even though I’ve journaled since I was a teenager, I never really talked about it with others. I guess I figured that journaling was something everyone knew about, knew how to do, and did if they wanted.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
In 2021, I started showing up on LinkedIn. I had heard it was a place of opportunity, and I assumed that’d bean I’d find a new job. Instead, I quickly learned that LinkedIn was an incredible learning community, and I was learning so much that I wanted to contribute so others could learn from me too.
I figured I’d write about journaling for three or four days, maybe stretch it out to a week, which would buy me time to figure out what I actually wanted to talk about.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
I couldn’t have imagined how deeply my messages about journaling would resonate with my community.
I couldn’t have imagined being asked over and over again to please share more about journaling because, “I’ve never heard anyone talk about journaling the way you talk about journaling.”
I couldn’t have imagined I’d start holding workshops, teaching people not just what journaling is all about, but how to build journaling practices that meet their needs.
I couldn’t have imagined that journaling was not just the individual activity that I always perceived it to be. But that when we journal in community, we’d learn and grow deeper and faster together, we’d hold space for each other so discovery was less intimidating, and that we’d build the most beautiful friendships.
And even though I didn’t expect that leaving my job to run my journaling business full time would be easy, I had no idea what I’d actually encounter:
Finally being able to hear the voice inside me, telling me that what got me here won’t get me there, helping me decide to put my beloved journaling group on pause while I reassess the direction I’m going.
The questioning - am I making the right decisions? Am I helping people in the right ways? Am I showing up in the right places? Am I building a business in a way that supports my life, not vice versa?
How long the runway would be - I’m already talking with organizations about providing journaling education experiences in late 2025 and 2026!
The magic of having flexibility in my schedule and getting to choose to do my work my way - however unconventional it may seem to others. I’ve taken Tuesdays off this year to take basketmaking classes, learned to work efficiently and effectively from the library as a fun change of scenery, and exercise during the middle of my work day (though I try to not show up to afternoon meetings with wet hair…).
The incredible outpouring of support from family, friends, and my community, even though not everyone understands what I’m called to do and why.
Realizing over and over again that the way I’m going to succeed in business is to do it in a way that feels good to me, even if that doesn’t look anything close to what others are doing. That curiosity, creativity, communication, and connection are the secret ingredients for me, and that when I approach everything with the aim to make them easy and fun, all the possibilities open up to me.
Does this mean I haven’t encountered any challenges?
Of course not!
Through them I’m learning, remembering, reminding myself that everything is figureoutable. That I can do hard things. That I always have more options that I realize. That I have people willing to help me when I ask for it.
I’m so grateful to get to be on this ride!
What was a big decision you had to make? What challenges did you face? What lessons did you learn? And if given the opportunity go back and redo it, would you? What might you do differently next time?
